North American Island - NJ017R
Treasure Island Camp

During a week of summer camp in 1996, one of our members was able to work enough stations to get one of our council Scout camps qualified and assigned a North American Island number with the US Islands Award Program.  Treasure Island while owned by the Cradle of Liberty Council, BSA in Wayne, Pennsylvania is actually a New Jersey island.  Each Island in the Delaware River alternates between Pennsylvania and New Jersey.  Treasure Island is one of two islands that make up the Treasure Island Scout Reservation, with the other island being Marshall Island which is a Pennsylvania island.

Treasure Island is a New Jersey island located along the Delaware River south of Frenchtown at Kingwood Station on Route 29 in New Jersey or Route 32 (River Road) on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware.

The SPARK Lodge Amateur Radio Club has had the island on the air since then.  You may have also worked our brother station WW3TI, the club callsign of Troop 461 Amateur Radi0 Club a Scout troop in Philadelphia, PA that camped on Treasure Island often.

You may have been lucky enough to receive one of our special QSL cards shown here that we used when we operated portable from Treasure Island.

Treasure Island is one of the oldest Scout camps in the United States of America, founded in 1913.  Treasure Island is also a one of a kind Scout camp in that it is the only island Scout Camp in the United States of America.  Treasure Island was the birthplace of the Order of the Arrow and Unami Lodge 1, which were both founded in 1915.  The Order of the Arrow was founded by E. Urner Goodman to be a national brotherhood of honor campers.  The island certainly has a history and legacy that will live on forever.

Unfortunately, the Cradle of Liberty Council Camping Committee found it necessary to close Treasure Island after flooding that had occurred in 2005 and 2006 and other many other issues.  You can read the full report of the camping committee on the Cradle of Liberty Council Web site at: http://colbsa.org/openrosters/ViewOrgPageLink.asp?LinkKey=2308&orgkey=541.
